Two traditional Ohio high school football powerhouse programs met Friday as the Newark Catholic Green Wave traveled to Paint Valley, with the Bearcats coming away with a 33-21 win.

The Bearcats struck first at 6:08 in the first quarter, driving 70 yards on 7 plays as Bryce Newland found Cruz McFadden on an 18 yard TD pass. Jackson Williams PAT kick made it 7-0.

Their lead increased to 13-0 at 9:22 of the second quarter, when Brayden Ison raced 91 yards from scrimmage for a TD, but the extra point try failed on a bad snap to the holder.

Newark Catholic got on the scoreboard at 8:11 of the second period when they drove 52 yards on 14 plays, completed by a 19 yard TD pass from Matt Carlisle to Slater Evans. The PAT kick made it 13-7.

The Cats increased their advantage to 19-7 at 1:41 of the second quarter, driving 53 yards in 5 plays. Lane Mettler finished the drive with a 3 yard run. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, and PV took their lead into halftime.

PV mounted a 63 yard scoring drive in 8 plays, scoring on a Lane Mettler 3 yard TD run at 7:55 of the third quarter. The PAT kick hit the upright, leaving the Bearcats with a 25-7 lead.

Things got tighter at 27-21, when NC traveled 84 yards in just 4 plays, scoring on a 61 yard TD pass from Matt Carlisle to Derek Hawk with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Bryce Newland connected on 12/16 passes for another 165 yards and two TD passes to Cruz McFadden on scores of 18 and 29 yards. Brayden Ison rushed for 134 yards on just 9 carries, scoring on a 91 yard run. McFadden had 7 catches for 124 yards and two TD's.

Paint Valley completes the non-conference slate at (2-1) and opens SVC play next Friday at Adena, the game that was for the conference title in Week 10, last year.
