2 People Killed and Six Others Injured in Scioto County Crash

Two people were killed and six other injured in a head-on crash on State Route 73 in Scioto County, Sunday night. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 11:54pm, near Rush Township Fire Department

Unit #1 was a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Michael Andrus, age 36, of McDermott. Unit #1 was also occupied with three young children, which were the step-children of Mr. Andrus: Zachary Rowe, age 10, of McDermott, Emilio Stiers, age 5 of McDermott, OH, and Roy Stiers, age 6, of McDermott, OH.

Unit #2 was a 2012 Jeep Wrangler driven by Cole Staggs, age 19, of West Portsmouth. Unit #2 was also occupied with three occupants: Skylar Niner-Carver, age 17, of West Portsmouth, OH, Jesse Johnson, age 18, of West Portsmouth, OH and Brynn Monroe, age 18, of Minford, OH.

Unit #1 was westbound on SR 73 near Primrose Lane when it crested the hill and then over-corrected and went left of center. Unit #2 was eastbound on SR 73 when it was struck head-on by unit #1. Washington Township Fire Department and Squad were on scene and were assisted by Portsmouth Ambulance and Patriot Squad. Cole Staggs, Emilio Stiers and Roy Stiers were flown from the scene by Air Evac and Healthnet.

Michael Andrus and Zachary Rowe were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Scioto County Coroner, Darren Adams. Skylar Niner-Carver, Jesse Johnson and Brynn Monroe were transported from the scene by squad to Southern Ohio Medical Center. All occupants were reported to have been wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
