Unioto Hands Westfall 1st SVC Volleyball Loss in Sweep

It was another wild night in SVC Volleyball Thursday.

Unioto opened some eyes with a three-set sweep over SVC unbeaten Westfall. The Westfall loss and Adena's (3-1) win at Southeastern, allows the Warriors to pull to within one match in the standings with four SVC matches to play.

Unioto 3, Westfall 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21)

(6-4) Unioto showed life Thursday after being swept by Huntington on Tuesday, taking down the SVC front-runners. Set #1 saw both teams get scoring runs with the Shermans holding four point leads, before the (9-1) Mustangs cut a 19-15 deficit to 20-19. Big play by Amber Cottrill put Unioto in the driver's seat scoring 5-4 the rest of the way for a 25-23 opening win.

Both teams traded leads in Set #2, with Unioto surging late for a 23-19 lead, then finished 25-22 for a (2-0) match lead.

More of the same in Set #3, as Unioto keeps the edge as late as 22-19, before winning 25-21.

Adena 3, Southeastern 1 (25-27, 25-16, 25-17, 29-27)

(8-2) Adena pulled to within one match in the standings with a win at (4-6) Southeastern. The Panthers stormed back from deficits of 18-10 and 24-20 in Set #1, for a 27-25 win and a (1-0) lead in the match.

The Warriors answered in Set #2, pulling away for a 25-16 win, and repeated that with a 25-17 decision in Set #3 for a (2-1) match advantage.

.

But, the Panthers got big play at the net from Skylar Hice and Hannah Lougheed to storm out to leads of 11-1, 13-2 and 21-11 in Set #4. That's when Adena answered with a run of their own to pull to within 21-17. The Panthers came right back with a run to 22-18 and 24-21 with "set-point". The Warriors held-on and got their own match-point at 25-24, only to see SE fight-back with two straight points for their own set-point 26-25. Both teams battled to a 27-27 tie, with Adena scoring the final two points for the 29-27 Set #4 win and a (3-1) match victory.

Makaela Lovely sparked the Warriors fourth set comeback with 5 kills while Ellie Harper added 4 kills along with 2 key blocks from Jenna Martin in the closing set.

The other wild match of the night was (6-4) Huntington's win over (5-5) Zane Trace. After winning the first two sets by identical scores, the Pioneers fought back to tie the match, only to lose a tough 17-15 fifth set.
