Chillicothe Announces Measures, Changes Due to COVID-Related Shortfall

Chillicothe leadership on Monday, June 8th announced steps being taken to save money due to a budget shortfall brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. These measures include a modified building schedule, cost saving measures and cuts in summer programming.

The following release was issued by Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney early Monday evening:

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney, Safety Service Director Jeffrey Carman and Parks and Recreation Director Bill Bonner are announcing changes regarding City operations and programming. These changes are occurring in line with public health concerns as well as serious budget constraints as a result of the pandemic.

Change in hours of the City Administration Building. In response to ongoing revenue losses caused by the pandemic, the City Administration Building will be closed on Fridays at least through the end of August. Many City employees will be participating in SharedWork Ohio, a voluntary layoff aversion program, which will result in a reduction in their hours worked and pay.

The David M. Smith Memorial Swimming Pool will remain closed for the summer. This decision was made in consideration of both public health and financial factors.

There will not be a large item pick-up program or community yard sale day. Regular yard sale permits are still being issued.

Parks and Recreation will resume shelter reservations that comply with the Governor’s social distancing guidelines.

For the first in years, The City of Chillicothe will also cancel July 4th fireworks show.

City officials say they appreciate your understanding and cooperation in these trying times. Please remain diligent in following guidelines on hand washing and social distancing whenever possible. By following health guidance issued by the Ohio Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we will over come this challenge as a community.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact the Chillicothe Service Department at 740-773-2700.
