The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio has confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down northwest of Chillicothe, on Wednesday evening. NWS estimates the twister had maximum winds of 75 miles per hour, with a path length of about 6 miles.
The tornado initially touched down on the south side of County Road 550 where several barns were heavily damaged with roofing material thrown across the road into adjacent properties about a quarter-mile downstream. From there, NWS says a consistent swath of enhanced tree damage was found along a nearly 6 mile continuous path across U.S. Route 35, Union Lane, Egypt Pike, State Route 207 and State Route 104.
With the enhanced swath of damage not found on the east side of the Scioto River, it is expected that the tornado lifted somewhere in the Scioto Flood Plain.
The tornado was part of a storm that blasted through the region, starting in southwestern Ohio and traveling northeast through multiple counties. Tornado warnings were issued in many of those counties.
The Wilmington weather bureau also confirmed several areas of non-tornadic high-end straight-line wind damage across parts of Clinton, Fayette, & Highland Counties. Some of those winds were between 70-80 miles per hour.
