Big Second Half Propels Paint Valley To 55-29 Win at Unioto

Unioto held their only lead of the game, after taking the opening drive 67 yards in 12 plays, but had to settle for a field goal from Lucas Hanes for a 3-0 lead at 6:01 of the first period. After that, it was all Paint Valley.

The Bearcats took their first lead to close the first quarter on a 7 yard TD pass from Cavan Cooper to Beau Blankenship to cap an 86 yard/13 play drive followed by a PAT kick from Dax Estep for a 7-3 lead.

Paint Valley made it 14-3 on a 57 yard scamper by Cordell Grubb at 7:45 of the second quarter, then Cooper connected with Grubb on a 48 yard screen pass for another TD at 4:54 for a 21-3 lead.

Unioto got the ball back on a Paint Valley fumble on a kick reception, scoring 4 plays later with 9 seconds left in the half on a Isaac Little 4 yard pass to Byrd Green. The PAT failed, making 21-9 at half.

Trammel Byrd scored on a 20 yard run, capping a 56 yard drive on 3 plays for a 27-9 lead at 11:03 of the third quarter. The Shermans cut that margin to 27-15 when Little connected with Maddox Fox on a 41 yard bomb and never got any closer.

Cavan Cooper made a pick-six for 56 yards for a 34-15 lead, then Trammel Byrd from 5 yards out at 2:37 to go for a 41-15 lead.

Cooper scored on a 30 yard run and later 29 yards, sandwiching a Newton Hoops TD pass to Fox.

Paint Valley totalled 427 yards, rushing for 343. Byrd rushed for 176 yards and two TD's and Cooper 96 yards and ran for two TDs and passed for another two scores.

Isaac Little threw 15/22 for 182 yards and 2 TD's and Cameron Lohnes ran for 71 yards and a TD.

Unioto was held to 8 rushing yards in the first half, but ended up with 127. They had 360 total yards.

The downside for both teams were turnovers and penalties. Paint Valley committed four turnovers and 100 yards in penalties on 10 flags, while Unioto had 12 flags for 105 yards and three turnovers.

Paint Valley improves to (3-1) in the SVC and will host Zane Trace next Friday in WKKJ's Herrnstein Hyundai Game of the Week. Unioto falls to (2-2) and will host Southeastern next week.
