Adena Grinds Out Win Over Zane Trace

The Adena Warriors remain in the SVC boys basketball title hunt with a 44-37 win over Zane Trace Tuesday in Frankfort. The win keeps the (8-1) Warriors within one game of conference leader (9-0) Unioto.

Tuesday's game was a makeup of a contest postponed more than a week ago due to the Pioneers being in COVID quarantine. Zane Trace did get three more players back from the COVID protocol in Kyle Stonerock, Trey Miller and Kanin Johnson.

Adena led 10-8 after one quarter and 19-18 at halftime, before building their biggest lead of the game at 32-24 late in the third period, before settling for a 32-26 advantage at the end of the third.

The Pioneers got to within 32-30 early in the fourth quarter, before Adena ran their lead to 36-30. ZT cut the margin to 36-33, but saw the Warriors climb back to a 40-33 lead with under two minutes to play.

Zane Trace clawed back to within 40-37, but the Warriors out the game way on the foul line for the 44-37 victory.

Adena shot 16/37 for 43% from the floor- including just 2/12 from the arc. The Pioneers were 15/31 for 48%- going just 2/5 from the arc.

Two big differences in the contest were the foul line and turnovers. The Warriors were 10/11 from the charity stripe while ZT was 5/9, and the Pioneers committed 16 turnovers to Adena's 9. Zane Trace out-rebounded Adena 20-15.

Logan Bennett was held to only 2 points in the first half, but ended the game with 16. Preston Sykes added 12 and Jarrett Garrison 8. Jacob Shipley, Dillon McDonald and Nate Throckmorton combined for the remaining 7 points.

Zane Trace was led by Nalin Robinson's 9 points and 9 rebounds, Kyle Stonerock had 8 points and 4 rebounds while Ben Nichols had 8 points. Xzander Ream added 5 and Trey Edler 1 point.

Adena improves to (8-1/14-2) and Zane Trace slips to (4-3/5-7).
