New Bill Would Let Ohio Women Sue Over Unintended Pregnancies

New legislation in Ohio is targeting men who get a woman pregnant unintentionally.

A bill introduced Weds by State Senator Tina Maharath would hold those men financially responsible, whether sex was consensual or not. In Senate Bill 262, a judge could award at least five-thousand dollars.

The Columbus Democrat says the financial cost is too often solely the mother's responsibility when it comes to unintended pregnancies, despite the fact that the father shares equal responsibility.

Under the proposal, women in Ohio would be able to file a civil suit no later than five years after conception against the man who caused them to have an unintended pregnancy. That's in addition to anyone the bill says "aids or abets" the man who impregnated her regardless of the circumstances.

The Center for Christian Virtue President Aaron Baer announced that his organization is backing the bill.
