Chillicothe residents will notice some temporary traffic control measures in place to help increase safety in a few targeted areas of the city. The safety measures are part of the city’s Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program, which was launched in March of this year.
The targeted areas of the city include Yoctangee Park, Watt Street, Piatt Avenue and Allen Avenue. Information from data-collecting speed signs placed in March showed that up to 20-percent of traffic in those areas were traveling at more than 10 miles per hour above the posted speed limits.
A four-week traffic enforcement effort conducted by Chillicothe Police also resulted in more than 60 speeding tickets and warnings.
Drivers will notice speed bumps along the main thoroughfare of Yoctangee Park to promote reduced speed, and high-visibility crosswalks and pedestrian safety islands and traffic circles to slow traffic at some intersections.
The temporary traffic control measures were put into place near the beginning of June and will remain in place through the end of June.
